If you’re considering a Matric Rewrite to improve your marks and enhance your chances of securing a spot in your dream university program, understanding how to strategically select the right subjects to rewrite is essential in order to otpimize your APS score. At Elroi Academy, we specialize in helping students achieve their academic goals by offering structured and flexible programs designed to boost your performance.
One key element of the matric rewrite journey is improving your Admission Point Score (APS). This score determines your eligibility for various university programs. In this article, we’ll explain what an APS is, how to calculate it, and, most importantly, how to choose the right subjects to rewrite to maximize your APS.
What Is APS and Why Is It Important?
The Admission Point Score (APS) is a scoring system used by South African universities to determine whether you meet the minimum requirements for a specific course. Each subject you complete in matric is assigned a point value based on your performance. For example:
• 80%+ earns 7 points
• 70%-79% earns 6 points
• 60%-69% earns 5 points
• And so on…
Your total APS is calculated by summing up the points for your top six subjects (excluding Life Orientation at most universities).
Improving your APS can be the difference between qualifying for your chosen program or falling short. If you’re unsure of your current APS, you can use an online APS calculator, such as the one provided by the University of Johannesburg or other reputable sources.
How to Choose Subjects for a Matric Rewrite to Improve Your APS
Not all subjects are created equal when it comes to boosting your APS. Here are some strategies to help you make informed decisions about which subjects to rewrite:
1. Replace Difficult Subjects with Easier Ones
If you don’t need certain challenging subjects (like Mathematics or Physical Sciences) for your intended university program, consider replacing them with easier options like Mathematical Literacy, Tourism, or Life Orientation. For example:
• If you scored a Level 3 (40%-49%) in Mathematics, switching to Mathematical Literacy could potentially improve your score to a Level 5, 6, or even 7.
• By earning higher marks in easier subjects, you can significantly boost your overall APS.
This strategy is particularly helpful for students who no longer need certain subjects to meet university requirements for their new career paths.
One crucial point to consider is that most matric rewrite institutions in South Africa are not registered to offer the National Senior Certificate (NSC). This means they cannot facilitate subject replacements. Such institutions primarily provide tuition support, leaving students to register themselves with the Department of Education for rewriting subjects they have already completed and for which they already have a School-Based Assessment (SBA) mark. However, when you want to replace a subject you didn’t have before, you must have a valid SBA mark for that subject.
This is where Elroi Academy stands out as an online matric rewrite center. Unlike many others, we are fully registered to offer the NSC, which allows us to assist students in making up to two subject changes for their matric without needing to complete the Grade 10 and 11 SBAs for those subjects. For example, if you struggled with challenging subjects like Mathematics or Physical Sciences, you can replace them with easier alternatives such as Mathematical Literacy or Tourism, significantly improving your APS score. This unique capability gives Elroi Academy a distinct advantage over other matric rewrite institutions, ensuring that students not only improve their marks but also increase their eligibility for university programs.
2. Focus on Subjects Close to a Symbol Change
Look for subjects where you narrowly missed moving up to the next level. For instance:
• A mark of 37%, 38%, or 39% can be increased to 40% or more with a focused rewrite.
• These small improvements can push you into the next APS category, significantly improving your score without requiring drastic changes.
This is one of the easiest ways to gain additional APS points.
3. Prioritize Your Lowest-Scoring Subjects
It’s generally easier to improve in subjects where you scored the lowest. For example, moving a subject from 30% to 50% (Level 2 to Level 4) is often more achievable than increasing a subject from 60% to 80%.
Focus on the weakest areas where there’s room for improvement, as these will offer the greatest APS gains.
4. Keep Career-Specific Subjects
While replacing or dropping difficult subjects can help, remember to retain subjects essential for your chosen field of study. For example:
• If you’re aiming for a science-based program, you’ll need strong marks in Mathematics and Physical Sciences.
• If you’re pursuing arts or humanities, focus on subjects like History, Geography, or Languages.
Elroi Academy provides guidance to help you align your subject choices with your career goals.

Why is it important to focus on subjects where you narrowly missed a higher performance level when planning a matric rewrite? Regard Teknik Telekomunikasi
The Point Score system gives the same point for all grades in the range. For example 5 points for 70 to 79. So whether you have a 70 or 79, you get a 5. So if you are improving your APS score, and could improve by say 15%, a subject that is further away from a symbol change will likely only change with 1 point (say 32 to 47), but if it was closer to a higher level it would change with 2 points (say 28 to 43). It therefor makes sense, strategically, to choose subjects which are already close to a symbol change since that will have the most probable point improvement and highest expected improvement in your APS score.
